Radiometer Physics GmbH (RPG) is a microwave technology company. We manufacture state-of-the-art microwave components and systems operating at cm- mm- and sub-mm frequencies (1.4 GHz to 2 THz). RPG’s product range covers Remote Sensing Instruments as well as test & measurement equipment, space products, and RF components & systems. The Remote Sensing division is one of the company’s main branches. Hundreds of our instruments are operated worldwide for remote sensing of the atmosphere, the ocean, and land surfaces from ground-based and airborne perspective. The main areas of application are weather forecasting, now-casting, research and climate monitoring.
Microwave Remote Sensing Instruments
Remote sensing at microwave frequencies enables continuous observations of clear sky, cloudy, and rainy atmospheres. RPG’s Remote Sensing Instruments are turn-key systems that cover a wide range of meteorological applications:
• Our radiometer series provide vertical profiles of tropospheric temperature and humidity, total water vapor, and cloud liquid as well as tropospheric attenuation and delay.
• Our polarimetric solid-state radars operating at 94 and 35 GHz allow for continuous observations of clouds and precipitation.
• Our microwave scintillometers enable the monitoring of heat fluxes in the atmospheric surface layer.
Ground-based microwave radiometers are useful for continuous and high temporal resolution observations of the troposphere – even in cloudy conditions. We offer stand-alone radiometer systems for operational use in nearly all environmental conditions. A comprehensive operating software and robust neural-network retrievals generate a collection of products suited for both the research community and weather forecast centres.
We offer a number of radiometer models, which provide accurate total amounts of atmospheric water vapour and cloud liquid. Our profiling radiometers additionally observe vertical profiles of temperature and humidity. Thermodynamic diagrams of stability and a variety of stability indices are provided as well.
Our 35 and 94 GHz Doppler radars are cost-effective and innovative instruments for range-resolved observations of fog, clouds, and precipitation. State-of-the-art hardware solutions and advanced processing techniques allow for extremely high sensitivity and range resolution. The applied calibration strategies provide unrivaled accuracy maintained under all weather conditions. This is the first cloud radar with an embedded beam-matched passive channel for liquid water path measurements. The radar also takes full advantage of Doppler, polarimetric, and scanning capabilities. The radar applications include, but not limited to cloud studies, classification of hydrometeors, quantitative precipitation estimation, wind profiling, and calibration of other meteorological radars.
Scintillometers for Heat Fluxes
Scintillometers are so-called transmit-receive systems that can continuously measure path-integrated heat fluxes in the surface layer. In 2014 Radiometer Physics GmbH released the first commercially available microwave scintillometer RPG-MWSC-160. It is designed for the combined operation with an optical Large Aperture Scintillometer (LAS) to simultaneously observe path-integrated sensible heat flux and latent heat fluxe on the kilometer-scale. Monitoring of those two fluxes is significant for a wide range of applications:
