Raymetrics is probably the most experienced atmospheric LIDAR manufacturer in the world, with more than 15 years in the industry. The company produces a range of backscatter, depolarization and Raman LIDARs for atmospheric applications such as remote dust/pollution tracking, visibility monitoring and smoke detection. Through a combination of experience and expertise, Raymetrics is able to offer some of the most powerful systems available commercially.
Our clients come from all over the world, including such prestigious organizations as the Met Office (UK), German Weather Service (DWD), National Environment Agency (Singapore) and the European Space Agency (ESA).
What is LIDAR?
LIDAR stands for Light Detection and Ranging. There are many types of LIDAR. Our most common product can be referred to as "aerosol LIDARs". They are designed to remotely probe the atmosphere up to a distance of around 20km away.
A pulse of light is emitted into the atmosphere from a laser. The light hits scatterers (aerosols, such as dust or clouds) and some of the light is returned to a telescope. Because we know the speed of light, we know how far away the scatterers are. The properties of the returned light also reveal properties of the atmosphere - everything from visibility to the presence of fire smoke or volcanic ash.
Raymetrics currently offers two main operational products - a vertical profiler and a 3D scanning device. The vertical system is designed to provide atmospheric profiles up to around 20km height. This system is targeted mainly towards meteorology, for applications such as volcanic ash detection, remote air quality measurement and Planetary Boundary Layer measurement. The 3D scanning system is targeted towards environmental applications, such as detecting incoming dust, tracking pollution in 3D, and remote fire detection.
Raymetrics also offers a range of customization features, including fully-tailored systems for clients. We are also constantly developing, with new products coming to market soon for gas detection.

Raymetrics installed a system on an island just offshore from Singapore. This 3D scanning LIDAR is designed to provide an early warning for wildfire smoke coming over from Indonesia, which greatly impacts air quality locally and also causes problems for aviation. The system was purchased by the National Environment Agency (NEA).
